Alex Gregory gained his first GB vest in 2004 in the U23 team finishing 11th in the Quadruple scull. In 2005 he was 4th in the double scull and 8th in the single scull the following year.
Alex learnt to row at Evesham rowing club where he was coached by Mark Earnshaw, at that time a history teacher at his school. Mark became one of GB Rowings first World Class Start coaches and was relocated to Reading at the same time Alex won a place to Reading university.
2007 saw his first senior season where he raced in the Quad but in 2008 the crew narrowly missed out on Olympic qualification due to injury. Alex was selected as spare man for the games. This was a turning point in Alex’s rowing career and he decided to swap sculling for ‘sweep’. In 2009 he made a major step forward by winning the pair at the GB rowing senior trials and gained a place in the men’s four.
Alex established his place in the new GB four during the 2009 World Cup series winning two golds and a bronze to take the overall 2009 World cup title. The crew then went on to win the World Championships in Poland where Alex became World Champion for the first time.
He then raced again in the men’s four for the 2010 season taking gold at the world cup race in Bled, Bronze in Munich and an exceptional gold medal in Lucerne.
With London 2012 firmly in his sights, the next stage of his career is an exciting prospect.
